Project 1: Chinese Character Contest

In the Chinese language study, quantity of characters mastered by the students is one of the key elements to improve the proficiency their reading and writing.

The objective of this activity is to provide students with the key structure of radicals and phonetic elements, therefore to assist them in their mastery of the language. This activity also provides an opportunity for students to self assessing tools to measure their own learning at their level and pace.

The desired outcome of this activity is for students to master 150 basic single characters and expand up to 1200 compound characters and 2000 phrases (there are specific and differentiated requirements for lower, intermediate and higher levels). In the process of mastery the basic skills, students will understand the character structure and learn to make connections between their prior knowledge and the new skills they are mastering. They will be able to categorize the accumulated vocabulary, therefore to overcome the extreme difficulty they usually face in learning the reading and writing skills of this unique language.

The tentative contest time and location:

  • Each school, that is willing to be part of it will start among the students who are taking Chinese lessons in their own school and then send the willing ones to the district
  • March 19-23, 2007 , the semifinal contest will be held in each school and districts during that week. So far, we have 5 possible districts for contest: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Guangzhou/Shenzhen.
  • April 7, 2007 , Middle School team will have final contest in Beijing. (In order to gain some experience, the committee has decided to begin small, just middle school team first, then expand our venue to both elementary and high schools.)

Most teachers who attended the 4 th ACAMIS conference hosted by Shanghai American School in July 2006 have participated in a 3-hour workshop. They also received the Teacher’s Handbook and Character Banks for the contest. We hope to have 1-2 Chinese teachers from each participating school as the key contact persons and have them send their contact information to us. More details of this activity will be sent out the contact persons soon.
