MS Model UN North -- February 2-3, 2007 -- BISS

Thanks to Allison White from BISS for coordinating this event and providing this thorough report and pictures.

The ACAMMUN conference, hosted by BISS was held at the Yan Xiang hotel this year. 180 Students from 15 different schools from around China attended the conference representing 81 different countries from around the world. Students were split in to 3 different forums ¨C GA, ECOSOC, and SC. At the conference students discussed a total of 11 different issues that affect the world today. At this conference 8 selected Middle School students were given the chance to chair the meetings, with the help of some High School parliamentarians. The students chaired the meetings very successfully and this lead to some high quality debate occurring in each forum.

Friday morning started the conference with a brief hello from Ms. White and then moved directly into Lobbying and Merging of student ideas for creation of resolutions to be debated on Saturday. The Resolution Approval Panel found itself swamped with over 30 well-written resolutions for their approval. In the afternoon students officially began the conference with each student representing a country giving a short speech. The delegates were also addressed by Ato Hailekiros Gessese, the Ethiopian Ambassador to China, who was good enough to be our guest speaker. He spoke on issues of education and regional peace and security as they affect the horn of Africa.

Saturday found all delegates in each of the 3 forums with more resolutions than they could ever hope to debate upon that day. The day was split into three debating times so that each different issue in the two large forums had time dedicated to it. Saturday at 3:30 the conference debating time was up and the ECOSOC and SC reported their progress to the GA. At 5 all the delegates eagerly trouped into the Banquet room for one last meal together. Colin Saunders, a former MUN delegate, currently working in Beijing as a communications consultant with the international public relations firm Fleishman Hilliard, was the closing guest speaker, speaking about how his MUN experiences have helped him in his career. Then, after a brief thank you address from Ms White, the conference was officially closed and many schools headed off to catch planes and trains back home.

The conference went wonderfully, which was mostly due to how hard the students worked and how willing they were to debate and work together with others from different schools and cities.
