This Professional Learning Network will be focused around collaboration and learning to advance our practices in the realms of service learning, global citizenship education, sustainability, teaching for the Sustainable Development Goals and developing a critical, reflective and inclusive approach with our practices and programs.

Sessions will be facilitated by LeeAnne Lavender, a storytelling and global citizenship educator who is also an independent coach and facilitator. She has worked in the East Asia region for over 10 years and, while now living in Canada, remains active in many virtual learning experiences in the region. Each session will feature educators from ACAMIS schools who will share best practices and spearhead exploration of key themes. The sessions will include ample time for dialogue, sharing and networking, allowing all ACAMIS participants to contribute and benefit from the contributions of others.

This professional learning network is ideal for any educator engaging in aspects of global citizenship education and/or service learning, or desiring to grow these programs in his/her/their classroom or school. Participants may include classroom teachers, CAS coordinators, service learning coordinators, sustainability leads/coaches, administrators and school leaders. Educators from Pre-K – grade 12 are welcome in this professional learning network.

Inside Out: Creating mindful and reflective cultures in our schools to maximize global citizenship and service learning

To launch our 2022/23 Global Citizenship and Service Learning PLN, our first session is all about our school campuses and environments. Some questions we’ll explore in our session include:

  • How can we be mindful and reflective of where we are and where we learn?
  • Why does a reflective and mindful perspective matter when it comes to service learning and global citizenship, and how does daily/regular practice help us become more purposeful and active global citizens?
  • How can nature be used to inspire and guide our learning experiences to foster self-reflection and well-being?
  • How can learners in urban settings connect with the natural world and with other types of reflective spaces in meaningful ways?
  • How can our campuses become relational, caring spaces where everyone is seen, heard and valued?
Join master educators Haakon Gould (SCIS-Shanghai) and Kenny Peavy (Bali Green School) for this meaningful session. They will share examples from their campuses as well as resources and ideas for you to use at your school.

LeeAnne is an experienced international educator who is passionate about service learning and global citizenship. She learned about service learning at one of Cathy Berger Kaye’s introductory workshops in 2010 at an Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) conference, and she was hooked. Since then, LeeAnne has implemented service learning cycles in numerous units of her own, and has coached dozens of colleagues in creating dynamic and meaningful service learning experiences for students. She served as the Service Learning coordinator for the AISA region from 2013 – 2015 and, in 2018, she teamed up with a colleague in Shanghai to found the Shanghai Service and Sustainability Network, continuing to serve as a co-ordinator of that network for three years. LeeAnne cares deeply about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and mentoring students to become active global citizens, and she has been facilitating workshops about aspects of service learning for several years. She is the service learning coach and coordinator for Concordia International School Shanghai, and is also working independently with educators worldwide.
