ACAMIS Conference: Roles, responsibilities and the essential tools for student activity implementation

Target Audience: Extra Curricular Activity Coordinators/Leadership and Service Coordinators/Heads of Department/Director of Sport

Student learning outside of the curriculum creates opportunities for enhanced learning and are in most cases the most memorable experiences for students during their schooling. Designing and implementing a program that is effective, measurable over time and develops social and leadership skills while being aligned to an organizations educational philosophy takes creativity, reflection and support from stakeholders. Implementing a program that endeavors to scaffold curriculum learning while tapping into the extraordinary benefits of external learning requires an understanding of how to take advantage of the open ‘living’ systems unique to each school. Ensuring administrative departments, faculty heads, parents, external partners are in lock-step with you will ensure the student experience is appropriately challenging and memorable.

This 2-day workshop will be split into the following themes:

Day 1 - Tapping the power of extra-curricular activities. Understanding our role, stakeholder expectations within a school context and ensuring child safeguarding and risk mitigation practices are enforced to allow students to have memorable experiences.

Day 2 – Developing student leadership while understanding cultural sensitivities. Real examples of implementation of IT to manage programs successfully.

Speaker Bios

Simon Joyce

Simon Joyce is the Head of Co-Curricular Activities Department and a member of the Senior Management Team at The ISF Academy. Simon has worked in the Hong Kong education sector since 1993 serving at senior management level in both educational institutions and companies specializing in youth activity provision. Simon is a registered teacher in Hong Kong and holds a Bachelor of Physical Education degree from Newcastle University, Australia as well as a Master of Business Administration from the University of Adelaide. He has a keen interest in education and in supporting additional learning opportunities for students. In addition to his educational and business expertise, Simon has experience in establishing and implementing administration, marketing and communication systems.

Gavin Fausset

Gavin Fausset is the Director of Athletics at The ISF Academy and oversees the sports program across both the Primary and Secondary schools. Gavin has been employed by ISF since August 2015, after joining as the Secondary School Sports Team Coordinator and Secondary Physical Education teacher. Gavin received a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Science and Football and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Physical Education from Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and Master of Arts in Education (Leadership and Management) from University of Bath in the UK. After initially teaching in the UK, he moved into international education and has since worked in Egypt and Thailand for a total of six years, as Head of Physical Education and Director of Sport. Gavin also works for the University of Sunderland, overseeing trainee teachers studying the International Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Douglas K. Prescott

Mr. Douglas K. Prescott is the Head of School/Superintendent for the Canadian International Schools of Beijing. Part of his role as Superintendent is to provide support to sister schools across China within the AKD family of schools.

His experience includes teaching Physical Education, Health and Sex Education, History, Biology, English; Counselor; Athletic Director; Vice-Principal; Principal; Founding Principal, Head of School and Superintendent. He has a great depth of understanding as it relates to both the Canadian and World International Baccalaureate curriculums with professional certification in IB PYP, MYP and DP programs. Mr. Prescott is passionate about empowering students and teachers with 21st century skills through living a life in service to others, thereby helping others to have the ability to make a positive difference in our world. He believes that every educator at all levels of the school system must make a “commitment to every student’s success”.

9:00 - 10:00	Risk v Reward	Participants will gain an introduction into strategies for child safeguarding Every participant will gain an understanding of the risks involved in non-curricular activities and strategies to mitigate risk. Participants will start an Action Plan for their responsibility

10:15 - 12:15	Roles, responsibilities and expectations	Participants will gain an introduction into open systems and be able to apply this model to their respective school operation. Every participant will gain a wider perspective of their role within an organization so they can identify areas to assist the implementation of an effective non-curricular program Every school will be given time to develop their Action Plan that can be applied to their respective schools.

1:15 - 2:00	"How to be effective in different organizational structures": Job-a-like debate	Debate with all participants regarding the highlight/challenges faced in their respective schools. Every school to contribute to discussion, brainstorm ideas and create an understanding of similarities and differences in their role.
2:00 - 2:45	How to be effective in different organizational structures	Participants will be able to identify influencers in the respective schools and strategies to push parameter limits. Participants will incorporate a stakeholder mapping structure and identify internal synergies of the organization into their Action Plan.

3:00 - 3:45	Case Study - Primary and Secondary Athletic Program at The ISF Academy	Presentation will include an overview of the Whole School initiative and strategies that have been implemented to enhance the culture of sport and school spirit within the Academy.

Schools will use this time to reflect on the day and note any important points, add to action plans and have time to ask further questions about any of the themes covered in each session.

Participants will have an opportunity to share how their schools use technology and discuss how they can integrate new technology at their school and add this to their action plan.

1:15 - 2:15	Case Study: Canadian International School's Student Co-lead Drama Program	This session will focus on CISB StageCats, a program established 5 years ago to provide students opportunities to participate in theatre outside the classroom and outside the prescribed "curriculum".
