Growth Mindset doesn't mean growth. James Anderson explains below why and also helps understand why Growth Mindset interventions are failing:

How do we create a school culture that supports the development of a Growth Mindset in our students, teachers and wider community?
- To provide schools with the deep understanding and the knowledge necessary to identify and challenge limiting beliefs in themselves, their colleagues and students.
- Identify how these beliefs are unintentionally supported and perpetuated through current school structures and practices to create a more growth-oriented school environment.
- Equip leaders with resources to deliver professional learning and achieve meaningful change in these beliefs and practices across the school.
Click here for a detailed introduction to the Mindset Continuum.
- This is a "train-the-trainer" course, appropriate for Early Years, Primary and Secondary Schools.
- School can register 2-10 participants, who are leaders in the school:
- Grade Level Leaders, Heads of Department/Faculty, Coordinators, Deputies and Principals
- 2 participants from each school will be trained as trainers that will work with James in Live Cohort sessions to process the content and learn how to facilitate it with other leaders in their school.
- If a school registers additional participants, they will participate in the Live Webinars, where participants can reflect on the facilitation experience, tailor content for their school context and be instructed on how to facilitate the content with the wider community.
- Participants will be given an extensive range of purpose-built learning activities and resources to facilitate their own onsite professional learning.
- Participants will connect with other schools to share ideas, resources and experiences.
Participation in this program provides your school with a 3-year unrestricted site license to use James Anderson's Growth Mindset online and print teacher training material with all staff at your school to assist in the delivery of your Growth Mindset Implementation Plan and Professional Learning.

1. Online Learning Modules
At the beginning of each cycle a comprehensive Online Learning Module will be made available to each school. These will contain an extensive range of learning material including reading assignments and video content. While you’ll have access to all resources, during each cycle you’ll be expected to become expert in just one aspect of this material.
All these resources will be available for you to use with all staff at your school as part of your site license.
2. Live Cohort Meetings
Coinciding with the release of the Online Learning Modules, schools will select 1-2 people from their group to work with James Anderson to review module content. These Live Cohort Meetings will be scheduled on Thursdays at 16:00 to 17:30 Hong Kong time. This session will outline the learning to be undertaken, how to manage it within your group, and the expectations regarding sharing that material back to the wider school Leadership Team. The expectation is that each school will focus on one section of the Online Learning Modules, preparing a summary to present back to the full cohort in a jigsaw type style.

Cycle 1: Backstories - THE Growth Mindset Strategy (November 13-28)
Team Leader Cohort Meeting - Thursday, November 19, 2020, 16:00 - 17:30 (HKT)
Virtual Office Hours - Schools can schedule a 1-Hour coaching session
Live Webinar - Saturday, November 28, 2020, 9:00 - 13:00 (HKT)
A central idea running through all successful Growth Mindset interventions is the idea of our Backstory. Recognizing the journey of slow incremental growth that every individual undertakes, and how that growth is achieved, is key to creating positive mindset movers. This cycle will focus on the backstory, the 5 truths about talent. You’ll discover how a misunderstanding of these truths leads to the fixed mindset, and how understanding them leads both to a Growth Mindset and our ultimate goal which is the achievement of growth.
Each school team will be allocated one of the 5 Truths about Talent (or an aspect of it) to review and present to full group.
Cycle 2: The Process of Growth (November 30 - December 12)
Team Leader Cohort Meeting - Thursday, December 3, 2020, 16:00 - 17:30 (HKT)
Virtual Office Hours - Schools can schedule an a 1-hour coaching session
Live Webinar - Saturday, December 12, 2020, 9:00 - 13:00
A Growth Mindset is not growth, it’s simply the understanding that growth is possible. But perhaps the single most significant positive Mindset Mover we can create is the achievement of growth. In this module each school will investigate either Effort, Mistakes, Practice, or Assessment and how we can approach these to ensure they are creating positive mindset movers. As in module 1, each school will review one aspect of this work in depth, to then present back to the full group.
Cycle 3: Creating Positive Mindset Movers with Nudges (January 8 - 23)
Team Leader Cohort Meeting - Thursday, January 14, 2021, 16:00 - 17:30 (HKT)
Virtual Office Hours - Schools can schedule a 1-hour coaching session
Live Webinar - Saturday, January 23, 2021, 9:00 - 13:00 (HKT)
Our biggest challenge to changing mindsets is the False Mindset. In this module we’ll explore the false mindset and why well-intentioned teachers frequently and unintentionally create negative mindset movers. We’ll explore how as leaders we create “nudges” in our school environments to help overcome this. This module will show how we apply our lessons from the first two modules to creating our style guide for your school.
Cycle 4 (week 7 and 8) Creating Your Growth Mindset Strategy (January 22 - February 6)
Team Leader Cohort Meeting - Thursday, January 28, 2021, 16:00 - 17:30 (HKT)
Virtual Office Hours - Schools can schedule a 1-hour coaching session
Live Webinar - Saturday, February 6, 2021, 9:00 - 13:00 (HKT)
This module gives your team time to consolidate and apply all the learning from the first three modules into a single school wide plan. You will have opportunities to review and refine your plan with both James and the other schools in the course. At the end of this module your team will have a deep understanding of the work to be undertaken, a more thorough familiarity with the resources available to them, and a comprehensive plan for implementing this work in their school over the next 6 - 12 months.
James Anderson is a speaker, author and educator who for more than 20 years has been working in education to make schools more thought-filled places.
The foundation of James’s work is the Growth Mindset. James takes teachers beyond simple social media catchphrases to create a teaching framework that develops robust and enduring Growth Mindsets in the classroom. By challenging teachers’ own Mindsets, he equips them to nurture Growth Mindsets in their students.
James skillfully unites the Habits of Mind, Anders Ericsson’s critical work on practice and Carol Dweck’s work on Growth Mindset. In doing so, he creates a powerful combination that increases student efficacy and achieves greater learning outcomes through the development of Learning Agility.
Having worked in classrooms and with schools for more than two decades, James knows that the students of today face problems fundamentally different to those of the past. Problems such as climate change, population growth and the depletion of natural resources are more global in their scope, more severe in their consequences, and more immediate in their nature. James firmly believes solving these problems requires today’s students to become smarter than the students of the past.
We don’t just need better thinkers – we need more agile thinkers. We need to teach students what to do when they don’t know what to do. We need to help them recognise that they can’t solve the problems they face with their existing skills and abilities. And we need to ensure they know how to improve their skills and abilities through Learning Agility. In doing so, we increase human intelligence. James shows you how to do this!
James Anderson regularly speaks at conferences around Australia and overseas. He is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP). As an author, he has published Succeeding with Habits of Mind and The Agile Learner, The Learning Landscape, as well as numerous e-books. He has published with Art Costa and Bena Kallick in Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind and Habits of Mind Across the Curriculum. His regular blogs are also read by thousands of educators around the world. You can find out more about James and the services he offers at www.jamesanderson.com.au.
