Most, if not all International Schools, have professional development (PD) resources for developing middle leaders. However, there seems to be a significant gap in leadership resources and support for Aspiring Senior Leaders. It is often assumed that Aspiring Senior Leaders and Senior Leaders themselves, often assume this burden by reading and attending conferences and workshops. These individual professional learning tracks, though, don’t always contribute to the development of the school, and in particular, to developing the next generation of leaders for the school.
This job-a-like, our 4th Annual PD Coordinator Event is for Educational Leaders with a responsibility for planning, facilitating or supporting leadership development in their school. In previous years we tackled tough questions of how to more effectively plan and evaluate professional development. These topics will still be part of the job-a-like this year, but they will be presented from the perspective of how to ensure the most important stakeholder, senior leadership, is included. By involving senior leaders in the development of aspiring senior leaders, they contribute directly to the continuum of growth within their school.
So, how does Senior Leadership come into the picture for this Job-Alike? Anecdotally, our facilitators will share the challenges and successes of Leadership Development Programs they have coordinated and facilitated. One variable that all speakers share in common, and will speak directly to, is the role of senior leadership. Buy-in and alignment across the entire SLT ensures the success of the leadership development initiatives they oversee. When SLT is engaged, committed, and involved in professional learning, it translates into a culture of learning that sustains itself.
