This Professional Learning Network will be focused around skills and knowledge that lab assistants and technicians can use to support student learning through the various roles they have across and within schools. Roles which can switch during the day from period to period.

Sessions will be facilitated by Steve Barkley a highly experienced coach and trainer of educators internationally. Henry Wong will partner with Steve to ensure Chinese speaking participants can access the learning, as well as moderate a Chinese language forum for sharing and learning. The sessions will include dialogue, sharing and networking for participants to contribute and focus the conversations. Issues that participants are addressing in their schools will be collected and built into each session.

Meeting #1:

September 15, 2022

Engaging and extending students in learning behaviors that increase their learning achievements. How can your informal questions and feedback promote deeper learning as well as learning beyond the content?

Meeting #2:

November 17, 2022

Understanding your sensory, organizational, and personality styles and how they may differ from some colleagues and students. Knowing the differences can lead to conscious choices that can increase effective collaboration and communication

Meeting #3:

March 16, 2023

Communication skills in dialogue with students and staff. Focus on engaging others in dialogue, active listening skills, responding to resistance and approaches to problem-solving.

Speaker:  Steve Barkley


Steve Barkley, Chief Learning Officer and Executive Vice-President of PLS 3rd Learning, is internationally recognized for his teaching and coaching. He's skilled in guiding teams through continuous improvement with coaching, mentoring, and professional learning communities. Most recently, Steve has concentrated on leadership training, coaching skills, and establishing teacher professional development goals, often focused on efficacy, agency and accelerated learning. Students' holistic growth requires learning opportunities that are authentic, purposeful, and connected. // He began his career in education more than 45 years ago as an elementary school teacher. For the past 30+ years he served as a consultant to school districts, teacher organizations, state departments of education, and colleges and universities both nationally and internationally. His strategies to connect with clients virtually has greatly increased his availability for personalized faciltation and coaching. // Steven is a master teacher-of-educators, a highly motivational speaker who is extraordinarily knowledgeable about life in schools. A catalyst for growth, he is a true role model who practices what he teaches.
