Event Overview

One exciting initiative at Nanjing International School (NIS) is the Nanjing International Pickleball Association (NIPBA), which provides teachers a lively way to unwind, stay active, and learn a new sport. Open to all skill levels, faculty gather every Tuesday at 4:16 PM for weekly sessions. Building on this enthusiasm, we hosted a successful internal tournament last spring and organized an inter-school teachers' tournament to promote skill refinement and foster connections among local international schools.

To expand the program to include students, we will hold a pickleball clinic for teachers on November 30th, focusing on refining techniques and effective coaching strategies. This will prepare educators to introduce the sport to their students, laying the foundation for a vibrant student program that promotes physical activity.

Our ultimate vision is that one of the schools will host an ACAMIS invitational pickleball tournament for students fostering friendly competition and strengthening inter-school connections. Join us in Nanjing for the Pickleball Clinic on November 30th, 2024!

Event Result

Last weekend, Nanjing International School was buzzing with excitement as 30 teachers from nine schools across China came together for an action-packed one-day pickleball event, sponsored by Boom Pickleball Club, Warping Point, and Luzz. The morning kicked off with engaging lessons, where participants learned the basics of the game, including the rules, techniques, and essential skills, all tailored to different experience levels. For beginners, grasping the unique pickleball scoring system was a bit tricky, but the coaches from Boom Pickleball Club broke it down into clear steps, making it easier to understand through plenty of practice.

Experienced players with a background in racquet sports focused on refining advanced strategies, such as mastering the dink and executing precise shots to control the game. A key focus was also on the kitchen and proper serving techniques. The kitchen, or non-volley zone, is the 7-foot area near the net where players can’t volley the ball. Additionally, mastering the serve—underhand with the paddle contacting the ball below the waist, and hitting diagonally—was emphasized to ensure a clean, legal start to each point. Another important skill covered was how to drop the ball effectively.

After a fun-filled morning of learning, the energy ramped up in the afternoon with a two-pool round-robin tournament. Teachers competed in a friendly yet spirited environment, applying their new skills in exciting matches. The tournament was definitely a highlight of the day, packed with action and lots of team spirit.

But it wasn’t just about the sport—it was a chance for educators to bond and connect with colleagues from across China. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, as everyone shared experiences and enthusiasm for both learning and pickleball. By the end of the day, participants left not only with improved techniques but also fresh ideas for introducing pickleball to their schools. It was the perfect mix of professional development and fun.

The event showcased pickleball's growing popularity as a sport that can strengthen physical education programs and build community. And with three schools already stepping up to host the first-ever ACAMIS Invitational Pickleball Tournament, the fun is just getting started!
