Overview

Agency is the power to take meaningful and intentional action to acknowledge the rights and responsibilities of the individual while supporting voice, choice and ownership for everyone in the learning community. Leaders can strengthen school communities by empowering teachers and students to take charge of what, where, why, with whom and when they learn.

ACAMIS Spring Leadership Conference will provide opportunities to see the impact that agency has had on schools around the world and how the learning community considers children’s rights, responsibilities and identities.

There are a number of areas that agency can be applied in our schools. Some possible topics of discussion would include:

  • Student directed learning
  • Staff driven professional development
  • Decision making in a distributed leadership model
  • How we are involving our staff in determining goals and decisions
  • Community involvement

CONFERENCE STRANDS:

  • Heads, Principals, Middle Management and Aspiring Leaders
  • Business Managers
  • Athletic Directors
  • ACE Coordinators
  • Curricular Leaderships
  • Marketing, Admissions, Communications (MAC)
  • Counselors
  • Special Needs/Learning Support
  • University Placement

In 2017, he was named one of 100 global "Changemakers in Education" by the Finnish site HundrED, and was named one of the Top 5 "Edupreneurs to Follow" by Forbes.

A former public school educator of 22 years, Will is a co-founder of Modern Learner Media and co-publisher of ModernLearners.com which is a site dedicated to helping educational leaders and policy makers develop new contexts for new conversations around education. Most recently, Will co-founded Change.School and, in addition, the ChangeLeaders.Community, two online destinations for educational leaders interested in creating relevant, sustainable change in schools using a coaching, curation, and community approach.

Will lives in rural New Jersey with his wife Wendy and, depending on the day, his children Tess and Tucker.

Freedom to Learn: The Importance of Student Agency in the Modern Classroom
The modern, networked world increasingly values and rewards those who are self-determined, voracious learners, those who are literally able to learn their way through problems and projects on a daily basis. Developing the skills, literacies, and dispositions to become that type of a learner must now become the focus of every school experience and environment. That all starts with honoring and expanding the freedom and agency of our students to learn what they want, when they want, with whomever they want, in whatever ways make most sense to them. Today more than ever, learners will inherit the earth. That starts with us.

DAVID GEURIN

David Geurin has served as principal and lead learner of Bolivar High School since 2008. In 2013, the school was named a National Blue Ribbon School and Missouri Gold Star School. More recently, he was honored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) as a 2017 National Digital Principal of the Year. He's been recognized as a leader in civic service, student agency, and STEM career development.

David is author of Future Driven: Will Your Students Thrive in An Unpredictable World? He’s passionate about leadership, school culture, and authentic learning experiences. He believes we must always be mindful that we're educating students for the world they'll live in and not the one we grew up in. He’s on a mission to help others find purpose and build capacity for change and excellence. He earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Missouri in 2008.

David shares insights with educators at the local, state, and national level through his keynotes, workshops, and presentations. He also shares his voice regularly via his blog, davidgeurin.com.

Future Driven: Will Your Students Thrive in an Unpredictable World?
The world is changing faster than ever. There are immense challenges but also great opportunities. The status quo won't prepare students for what they will face. Learning should be an adventure. We need a bold vision for developing learning environments that inspire students to become stronger leaders and learners. We'll explore why achievement shouldn't be the chief aim of education, and how student and teacher agency should play a larger role in our schools. Preparing our students for the future means empowering them to do meaningful work now. We need more creativity, curiosity, and empathy in our work. Being a passionate learner should be just as important as being a proficient learner.

Accreditation Workshop

2019 POST-CONFERENCE THREE ACCREDITATION WORKSHOPS
CIS, NEASC and WASC
Shanghai Community International School - Hongqiao Campus
Sunday, March 3, 2019
8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Costs: Click on below links to see the costs.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

What will the workshops address?
CIS, NEASC and WASC will offer separate one-day workshops related to accreditation. Separate announcements will be sent to the respective constituents or links will be provided through the agency’s website.

The sessions will address aspects of the accreditation process as an ongoing school improvement process. These one-day workshops will involve participants in interactive sessions that provide accreditation training for schools and/or visiting committee members. Emphases will vary with the accreditation agency.

How do I learn more information about each session? How do I register? Is there a cost?
Please see the brief descriptions and the links below for further information regarding each session.

CIS
The goals of this interactive CIS workshop are to:
  • Deepen understanding of accreditation as a school improvement process
  • Provide a “taster” for individuals who would like to become trained CIS evaluators. (Note: all CIS evaluator training is done online, so this workshop does not qualify participants as evaluators)
  • Ensure schools understand and fully utilize the services available to a CIS member e.g., Careers and Recruitment, Higher Education, sharing data and knowledge, child protection and professional development opportunities.
The workshop is designed for Heads of School, CIS accreditation coordinators, schools interested in becoming a CIS member and those interested in learning more about how to become a CIS evaluator.
Sign up via this link: CIS Accreditation Workshop

NEASC

A one-day workshop for any educator interested in serving as a NEASC ACE Learning Accreditation Visitor. This workshop is also appropriate for school stakeholders who are undergoing ACE accreditation or would like a deeper understanding of the accreditation process. Click here for more information.

WASC
ACS WASC will offer a Focus on Learning visiting committee member and self-study training workshop. The goals of this session are:
  • To prepare educators to serve on ACS WASC visiting committees, emphasizing the role and responsibilities of an ACS WASC visiting committee member
  • To examine the essentials of the Focus on Learning process and its adaptability from a self-study perspective.
Visit the ACS WASC website for additional information and to register for the workshop:

Sponsor the ACAMIS 2018 Technology Conference
October 19-20, 2018 | Western Academy of Beijing

ACAMIS Technology Conference is the only major technology conference in China that involves international schools. Our 75 member international schools comprise over 8,000 teaching staff, serving some 64,000 students from various nationalities.

Conference Focus
The Technology Conference provides opportunities for professional development for teachers around the use of technology in student learning and teaching in international schools, both in and out of the classroom. These teachers are influential in the purchase of systems, equipment and supplies related to technology in their international schools. The conference design is to provide professional development which is “for teachers by teachers”.

Usually 8-10 Technology related sponsors attend. We will actively limit sponsorship to a maximum of 10 sponsors to help maximize your exposure. A sponsor presentation opportunity will also be offered.

Target Attendees
Broad range including classroom teachers, technology coaches and technology leaders/ administrators/support staff in International Schools.

We hope that 100+ people will attend.

Sponsor Presentations

So that you have opportunity to engage with conference delegates directly, 30 minutes of the conference will be devoted to scheduled sponsor presentations (with the date/time advised in the conference lead up). It is optional for sponsors to make a presentation.
